🦋 IC Information

Character Name: Tidus (no last name given)
Age: 17
Canon: Final Fantasy X
Canon Point: His last scene in the game, atop the airship.
Character History: Here
Canon Abilities: Tidus is a trained athlete (he plays Blitzball, which is essentially underwater rugby) and he trained in using a lightweight sword throughout his journey. His non-standard-human abilities include the ability to hold his breath underwater for longer than average (at least 5 minutes at a time) and very minor time magic.

Spell inventory:
Haste: Temporarily doubles movement speed of target (let's say...five minutes)
Slow: Temporarily halves movement speed of target (again, five minutes?)
Cheer: Temporarily enhances strength and stamina of target (five minutes?)

Inventory: Tidus carries his standard blue sword, Brotherhood. It's enchanted with water magic, so a strike with it also hits like a hard wave crashing into a person.

🦋 Personality

Option 2: You may instead choose words from the following list to expand upon as your personality section. Elaborate on what this word means to your character, specifically their thoughts about it. For Canon Characters, you can choose five words. For Original Characters, you will need to choose seven words. Keep the word count to 100-300 per choice.

  • Green

  • Hey, newbie here!

Green is...bright and beautiful. It represents new experiences, but it's also alien to Tidus. He spent most of his life in a sprawling mega-metropolis fully surrounded by ocean, where natural vegetation was extremely hard to come by. Once he came to Spira, he found himself in a world full of quiet and green. War had wiped out most of civilization's technology, so any familiar-looking tech structures were overgrown with grass and moss. Initially, green just reminded him of how homesick he was. But then he got to know his companions better, and appreciate how much they loved this world and wanted to save it.

When Tidus sees rolling fields of green now, he's more curious than apprehensive. Green reminds him of riding a giant chocobo through the fields, wind in his hair, or sitting with Yuna on a field at dusk. It's a sign of life in a world that's so full of death. He wishes he could take all the time in the world to explore nature with Yuna, without the time crunch of the pilgrimage, but his tragedy is that he can't. They'll never get to live together in peace.

  • Dead

  • A city dead for a thousand years. The end of Yuna's journey. The last chapter in my story.

As Auron once told him, Spira is trapped in a spiral of death. When Tidus first arrives, he thinks death is something to be feared and resisted. He's a young and brash hero from a world where nothing's ever too bad for long, he can conquer any obstacle. That big monster in the sky that's killing everyone and keeping the whole world terrorized? They'll knock it out no problem and all the death will stop. Everyone will get their happily ever after, and life will be beautiful.

Over time, Tidus comes to understand that death isn't such an easy enemy to beat. Every time Sin strikes, the bodies pile up. People are crushed by despair. Through all this, he falls in love with Yuna, a girl who is knowingly marching to her death in order to bring life. She believes her sacrifice will stop all the needless death in the world, at least for a little while. Tidus tries desperately to convince her that her life is worth more than that, that they shouldn't sacrifice her.

But eventually he comes to understand that either he dies or she does. There is no third option. Because he loves Yuna more than anything, Tidus is the one who sacrifices himself in the end. He accepts death to stop the death of the person he loves...he got to live for a while, and it was beautiful.

  • Friendly

  • That's what friends are for, right?

In spite of (or perhaps because of) Tidus's lonely upbringing, he is generally an easygoing person. He happily greets most people he encounters. Once he joins Yuna's pilgrimage, he spends a lot of time getting to know Yuna and her other guardians, offering words of encouragement wherever he can. He'll try his best to get Lulu to laugh, encourage Wakka to give blitzball another go, support Kimahri against his bullies, defend Rikku's affinity with machina against Wakka's ignorance, tease Auron, and he especially cares for Yuna.

Yuna tells Tidus early in the story that she was taught to smile when she was feeling sad. This troubles him deeply, and he spends most of their conversations afterward trying to give her happy thoughts. He doesn't know that Yuna is destined to die, and that causes him grief later...but as she explains, his optimism comforted her with happy memories anyway.

Tidus grew up with an example of the opposite of friendliness: his father Jecht was so boastful and aggressive that he almost never showed his son affection or encouragement. Part of Tidus's inclination toward kindness is out of spite for his father's way of doing things, for sure, but he's genuinely a very social person and finds his life much easier with friends along for the ride. Making people laugh is genuinely fun...and it makes Yuna smile.

  • Pride

  • Star player of the Zanarkand Abes! Didn't anyone tell you?

Tidus is a celebrity back in his hometown, and some of that arrogance has stuck with him. He's regularly boastful about his athletic accomplishments, and he's quite hard-headed. He follows his impulses regardless of the consequences, and that can sometimes get himself and his teammates into trouble. "It's the right thing to do", he says, utterly sure of his path forward even when he knows the least about the world. He stomps all over taboos and disregards traditions. This is where Tidus's similarity to his father Jecht shines the most, and he resents that when it's pointed out.

Not all pride is dangerous, however. When Tidus is invited to join his friend Wakka's failing blitzball team, he encourages the players to have pride in themselves. They can aim for victory, he's sure of it! He urges them to practice hard and really fight, boasting about the team's new prowess to everyone who will listen. Protecting Yuna is also a matter of pride for him: he's always pushing the guardians to do better at protecting Yuna, because their strength is her strength.

It's important to be proud of who you are, but not so proud that you don't listen to anybody else. He's learned that over the course of his journey.

  • Sin

  • Sin...Sin is my old man.

In Spira, Sin is the name of the giant creature that terrorizes the people. It strikes seemingly at random to wipe out cities. Sin has that name because the people believe it exists as a punishment for their sins.

For Tidus, it's personal: the current incarnation of Sin is being driven by his father, Jecht. Jecht didn't choose to become Sin, but he journeyed as a guardian to high summoner Braska ten years ago. Both a summoner and one guardian must sacrifice themselves to defeat Sin, as Jecht did, and the fallen guardian is corrupted and transformed into the next Sin. Jecht has some awareness in his current state, but he can't stop the attacks.

Tidus's initial reaction is shock and anger. He hates his old man for neglecting and bullying him when he was young, then leaving for ten years. Tidus lashes out at Sin at first, yelling at him for being a coward. But every time Tidus comes into contact with Sin, he understands more and more that his father is trapped. That he'd been immature and had to mature over the pilgrimage like Tidus is doing now. Jecht just wanted to go home to his son. And now they're both stranded and locked in a fight to the death.

Over time, Tidus slowly accepts their fate. He still puts on a show of bravado, but when he finally helps fight Sin...he knows that they're both going to die. He still hates everything his old man put him through, but maybe they can be at peace now.

History: here!
CRAU History: N/A

Personality:

Optimistic: Tidus has an almost unflinchingly sunny outlook. Not only is he overconfident in his own athletic and combat ability to the point of cockiness (something he inherited from his old man), but he earnestly believes in everyone else too. He believes the long-suffering Aurochs team can win a blitzball game against all odds. He believes his new friend Yuna is the best summoner ever and never loses faith that she can defeat Sin. He immediately sees the good in his new friend Rikku and fails to understand the widespread prejudice against her people...though he's also fond of her because she was the first person to feed him when he was hungry, to be fair. But as the horrors of Spira's grim reality set in, and Tidus realizes that the people have grown up always living in fear of a sudden and violent death, his optimism becomes pure determination to save the world, matching Yuna's.

Impulsive: Thinking things through isn't really this guy's strong suit. Tidus wears his heart on his sleeve and follows it through to the end. If he thinks it's something's unfair, you bet he's going to try and change it, long-standing traditions be damned. He shoves right past the priests who tell him he can't go somewhere when he thinks an innocent person is in danger. He'll back the most dangerous plan for barging into a hidden temple if it'll get results the fastest. Even if that gets a fiend on their tails. When he knows what he wants, he goes after it single-mindedly.

Stubborn: Tidus's determination is fed by his stubbornness, and by the end of his journey it becomes a full-fledged hero complex. Tidus refuses to let his comrades give in to their own despair. After the team destroys what they thought was the world's last hope, he refuses to let them give in. He'll think of another way. His commitment to his path is tested the most when the true nature of their new plan to defeat Sin is revealed: in order to free Yuna and his friends from the threat forever, he must sacrifice himself. It hurts, but he accepts it with a somber smile.

Compassionate: At his core, Tidus is a kind and giving person. Part of this is the aforementioned hero complex, but he genuinely hates to see people suffer and tries to make them feel better. He'll go out of his way to rescue a small girl, he'll tell jokes to try to lighten a mood, and when faced with all of the suffering in Spira, he'll go quiet. Slowly, his desire to go home transitions into a desire to see this through to the end. Perhaps he's not as selfless as Yuna, but he does care deeply for his new friends. Especially Yuna. When he learns what will happen to her, he's immediately willing to give up everything to prevent it. And he does, in the end.

Naïve: To be fair, Tidus has been thrown headfirst into a world he knows nothing about, but he lived a fairly sheltered life as a sports star and comes across as clueless at times. His desire to believe the best of most people (except the ones who make eyes at his girl) is a little foolish, and it takes him far longer than it should to clue in to what a summoner's journey ultimately means. He really doesn't want to believe that such grim reality is possible, but it is. And now that he knows, he tries to fight it.

CRAU Personality: N/a

Always Keep In Mind: How Tidus perceives the world and how the world actually is aren't always in alignment. He sometimes has difficulty seeing things from others' perspectives (especially his father's), but he can with time.

A large part of his obnoxious actions in the game stem from his status as the sole sunny outsider in a somber world, so he'd be...a little less sticking out like a sore thumb when he's not the only newcomer.

And he doesn't always monologue, that was a special case...but it sure means he likes to reflect on the past a lot. He'll probably keep a diary here or something.

Questions: Write an IC answer to the following questions:

What do you want to study at Diatu Magicademy?

Hm. Not that I know too much about this magic---it's pretty different from what I'm used to. I'm no music guy, and sundering just sounds dangerous. Does Bala-inlota count?

All right, all right. If I have to pick a branch of magic, then Thaumaturgy sounds like the way to go. Direct, easy to grasp, all that good stuff.

If you knew you could go back to the moment you left, would you leave immediately or continue your studies for a while?

There's not really anything left for me back there, so I guess you're stuck with me!

If your enemy was at Diatu Magicademy, how would you react?

Well, I wouldn't be too surprised, because he keeps finding a way to come back and creep me out no matter how many times I fight him. At least he wouldn't be able to hurt my friends back home anymore...I'd call for help and fight him? Seriously, you do not want that guy around. He's insane.

When is it acceptable to resolve a dispute by force?

When someone's hurting people and they won't listen to reason. I'm not gonna go for my wand first thing, except for that other guy...but I can't just stand by when innocent people are in trouble, you know?

What should the supreme goal of any wizard be?

To use their magic to help people, I think. Not that they should use it for everything, but it'd be nice to find lost pets. Help people warm their house in the winter. That kind of thing.

Powers: Characters in Final Fantasy X can learn an entire spectrum of skills by endgame, but for convenience's sake I'm just gonna stick to the ones that are in Tidus's natural growth area.

-Time manipulation magic: there's a Haste spell that doubles the caster's speed and a Slow spell that halves the target's speed. Duration...let's say three minutes.

-Cheer: Through the power of...uh, optimism, he increases his party's strength by 50%, let's say for three minutes.

-Not an obtainable spell, but Tidus can hold his breath far longer than a normal human, including playing a rough contact sport underwater for up to five minutes at a time.

Items:

-Please give the boy a blitzball. It's a white and blue heavyweight ball of approximately soccer ball size with various round grips on it, designed to be kicked and thrown at high speeds underwater.

-His signature sword, Brotherhood. It's a translucent blue blade with watery bubbles rising from it, and has the ability to do water damage.

Welcome to The Survey of Doom

This is a writing exercise that will get you thinking about a character in great detail. Following completion, you may find that you have cleaned up some of that dust that's been coating a stored-away muse, mustered up some headcanon, and/or learned something new about your character.

[ Please edit each question to suit the pronoun that best refers to your character. ]

____

- Body and Appearance -
1. Describe the character's height and build. Is he heavyset, thin, short, rangy?
Tidus stands at 5'9", slightly above average. He has an athletic build, lean but with definite muscle from all that training.

2. How old is he?
17

3. Describe his posture. Does he carry himself well or does he slouch?
He stands tall most of the time, but he might slouch when he's feeling particularly shifty or oputy.

4. How is his health? Is he fit or out of shape? Any illnesses or conditions? Any physical disabilities?
He keeps himself in top shape! Star athletes have to, after all.

5. How does he move? Is he clumsy, graceful, tense, fluid?
His movements are quick and *generally* graceful, but he can slip sometimes. As he develops into the ninja role, he'll start to learn parkour. And that will enhance his circus-like flipping even more.

6. How attractive is this character physically? How does he perceive himself in the mirror?
He's a cutie and he totally knows it. The girls swooned over him in Zanarkand---those muscles, that sweet face, his athletic skill. But he's not as arrogant about it as he used to be.

7. Describe his complexion. Dark, light, clear, scarred?
He's bronze, like his father, but canon/SE is really inconsistent in its portrayal of this.
Here's a reference picture!

8. Describe his hair: color, texture, style.
He has very light blond hair, short and fluffy.

9. What color are his eyes?
Bright sky blue, wide and idealistic.

10. Does the character have any other noteworthy features?
None come to mind.

11. What are his chief tension centers?
Definitely stretching across his shoulders from all that throwing and tackling.

12. What is the character's wardrobe like? Casual, dressy, utilitarian? Bright colors, pastels, neutrals? Is it varied, or does he have six of the same suit?
It's a Tetsuya Nomura design, you know how this goes. 'Fashionable' asymmetry, belts, buckles, and zippers. Everything in Spira is fairly bright and his blitz uniform is no exception. Bright yellow hoodie/vest thing, bright yellow shoes...and these weird black asymmetrtical overalls. That's all he wears, ever---but I imagine he must have had civilian clothes somewhere, bright and revealing just like everything else in this world.

13. Do his clothes fit well? Does he seem comfortable in them?
His blitz uniform is a little bulky, but they all are and he's well used to it.

14. Does he dress the same on the job as he does in his/her free time? If not, what are the differences?
Well...canon doesn't give him any alternate outfits but I imagine he'd probably wear Spira's equivalent of hoodies and jeans. Probably with more belts, and tight-fitting to show off.

15. You knew it was coming: boxers, briefs, or commando?
Jockstrap, duh.

- Speech -
1. What does this character's voice sound like? High-pitched, deep, hoarse?
His voice is fairly light and high-pitched, but it drops when he's being mature and reflective.
A sample of his usual tone.
A more serious sample.

2. How does he normally speak? Loud, soft, fast, evenly? Does he talk easily, or does he hesitate?
His usual voice is loud and confident, but it can drop when he's unsure of himself.

3. Does the character have a distinct accent or dialect? Any individual quirks of pronunciation? Any verbal tics?
He says 'ehhh' and 'huh' a lot. He's eternally confused.

4. What language(s) does he speak, and with how much fluency?
He speaks Spiran, and he can butcher Al Bhed---but he's fluent enough to read Al Bhed, at least.

5. Does he switch languages or dialects in certain situations?
Nope.

6. Is he a good impromptu speaker, or does he have to think about her words?
He says everything without too much thought. This can be good or bad.

7. Is he eloquent or inarticulate? Under what circumstances might this change?
His usual tone is casual, it can devolve into babble under too much stress, and you will never really find him speaking poetically unless he's reminiscing about Yuna.

- Mental and Emotional -
1. How intelligent is this character? Is he book-smart or street-smart?
Totally clueless---not book smart or street smart, really. His main center of intelligence is empathy.

2. Does he think on his feet, or does he need time to deliberate?
He jumps right into everything without thinking.

3. Describe the character's thought process. Is he more logical, or more intuitive? Idealistic or practical?
Initially, he wants to believe the best in everyone and hope for the best outcome, but there are certain types of people he absolutely doesn't trust---liars and showboaters are way up there. He thinks with his gut and his heart, and once he decides he feels a certain way, there's almost nothing that can change it.

4. What kind of education has the character had?
Standard Zanarkand education---just enough for basic competency, he had more important things to do. Like blitz.

5. What are his areas of expertise? What, if anything, is he interested in learning more about?
Blitzball! He's the king of blitzball, but he definitely wants to learn more about the world he's now living in. It's dangerous to be clueless, he knows that now.

6. Is he an introvert or an extrovert?
Extroverted to the extreme.

7. Describe the character's temperament. Is he even-tempered or does he have mood swings? Cheerful or melancholy? Laid-back or driven?
His general disposition is cheerful, but there are certain subjects he's very moody about---family, love, and abandonment are just some of them. He's absolutely driven to do his best to keep his loved ones together and keep going.

8. How does he respond to new people or situations? Is he suspicious, relaxed, timid, enthusiastic?
He's very enthusiastic, but he can be reminded to take caution if a more responsible adult is around.

9. Is he more likely to act, or to react?
Act, definitely, but if someone else gets to it first he's super-quick to react too.

10. Which is his default: fight or flight?
Originally it was flight, but things have changed. He's through with running away from his problems...mostly.

11. Describe the character's sense of humor. Does he appreciate jokes? Puns? Gallows humor? Bathroom humor? Pranks?
Puns and pranks are his bread and butter! He's had it with death, so no gallows humor.

12. Does the character have any diagnosable mental disorders? If yes, how does he deal with them?
None,really

13. What moments in this character's life have defined him as a person?
His father's disappearance and mother's abandonment drove him down the path to become somebody---but coming to Spira changed 'somebody' from blitz celebrity to fledgling hero. Falling in love with Yuna taught him the value of love and sacrifice, and finally freeing his father gave him the chance to grow past that old hatred.

14. What does he fear?
Being forgotten. He's already dead, so there's not much else that can get him.

15. What are his hopes or aspirations?
More than anything he wants to return to Yuna's side, but that ain't happening, so he'll settle for playing blitzball and helping people out.

16. What is something he doesn't want anyone to find out about him?
What a loser nerd he is. Oh wait, too late for that.

- Relationships -
1. Describe this character's relationship with his/her parents.
OH BOY, this is a fun subject.
Tidus was born to the Great Jecht, a star blitzball player and drunkard, and a mother who canon doesn't bother to name. Jecht pushes his son aggressively and bullies him, trying to instill a desire to be the best in him. Tidus's mother is totally enamored with Jecht and tends to neglect her son for it, so little Tidus has a lot of resentment to go around.

Then his dad just has to disappear and his mother dies from grief, leaving Tidus with a disgruntled old friend of Jecht's for a guardian. This all happens when the boy's seven, by the way.

As Tidus journeys through Spira ten years later, he learns that his father did grow up on his own journey, and that he loved him all along---he was just terrible at showing it. After freeing his father from his tragic fate, Tidus forgives him, and they'd be content in the afterlife together if not for this new life.

2. Does the character have any siblings? What is/was their relationship like?
Nope!

3. Are there other blood relatives to whom she is close? Are there ones he can't stand?
Nope!

4. Are there other, unrelated people whom he considers part of his family? What are his relationships with them?
There's his guardian, Auron. Auron was Jecht's best friend from Spira and promised to watch over Tidus in his place. He was bitter for his own reasons, had no clue how to raise a child, and...well, it showed. Auron was strict and no-nonsense, rarely affectionate, and often annoyingly cryptic even to the end---but Tidus cared for him, still. He was grateful to have someone.

5. Who is/was the character's best friend? How did they meet?
This is a toughie, there are two contenders, but I think ultimately I'll have to choose Rikku, who's like a sister to him. Rikku and her crew rescued Tidus from a fiend in a temple when he first arrived in Spira, all lost and confused. The girl fed him when he was hungry, and that earned his loyalty. They spend most of their journey together scheming to save the girl they both love, but their cheer and exuberance makes life a party. Most of the time.

6. Does he have other close friends?
His next-closest friend in the group is Wakka, his older brother figure. Wakka has his faults, but he's caring, fun-loving, and most importantly plays blitz. Then there's Lulu, the serious black mage---she's wise, a patient teacher, and they eventually become close. And, of course, there's Kimahri! The quietest of the group, he's the most fiercely loyal to the cause and soon warms to Tidus and his dedication to saving Yuna and Spira.

7. Does he make friends easily, or does he have trouble getting along with people?
He eventually manages to charm most of the people he meets.

8. Which does he consider more important: family or friends?
Friends, especially considering what his only close relative is like, ha.

9. Is the character single, married, divorced, widowed? Has he been married more than once?
He's devoted to a girl he'll never see again. Yuna, the love of his life, light of his heart...she changed him forever, and he'll be very reluctant to move on from her if ever.

10. Is he currently in a romantic relationship with someone other than a spouse?
Yuna. His heart is always connected to the lovely summoner who trusted him, laughed with him, and showed him a better way to live and hope. Fate has separated them, but they'll always be connected.

11. Who was his first crush? Who is his latest?
His first crush was defintely a blond from one of the swimsuit magazines Jecht kept around the house...but now it's Yuna, always and forever.

12. What does he look for in a romantic partner?
Before, he would've said sense of humor, great looks, willing to be wild---but now he looks for sweetness, a willingness to dream, and a heart full of love. If you haven't guessed, that's Yuna.

13. Does the character have children? Grandchildren? If yes, how does he relate to them? If no, does he want any?
He is so not ready to have children. If he ever got back to Yuna he'd go with her wishes, absolutely, but a part of him is afraid he'll turn out to be as bad as Jecht was early on.

14. Does he have any rivals or enemies?
SEYMOUR! Seymour the scumbag Maester who dared to marry and kiss his girlfriend, all as part of an evil plot to destroy the world. He took savage pleasure in killing him repeatedly.

15. What is the character's sexual orientation? Where does he fall on the Kinsey scale?
He leans mostly heterosexual, probably a 1-2 on the Kinsey scale.

16. How does he feel about sex? How important is it to him?
He was into casual flings in Zanarkand---attachment was bad. He'd seen how his family had been wrecked. But he wants to be a different person now, for Yuna. Now he won't do it without his heart fully in the act, and if that can't ever happen, that's okay.

17. What are his turn-ons? Turn-offs? Weird bedroom habits?
He's pretty straightforward. Dirty talk will get him, definitely, as will temperature play, costumes...but he definitely wants to make sure his partner is equally enthusiastic.

- Beliefs -
1. Do you know your character's astrological (zodiac of choice) sign? How well does he fit the type?
He doesn't have a canonical birthday, but would probably align with Aries. Enthusiastic impulsive leader type, yes.

2. Is this character religious, spiritual, both, or neither? How important are these elements in his life?
Religion wasn't really a thing in Zanarkand, but it is in Spira. He never quite buys into Yevon's teachings, which indeed turn out to be bullshit, but the spiritual aspect of the fayth and the Farplane is very real. He believes in the people, in their power, and just wants them to be set free---even at the cost of his 'life'.

3. Does this character have a personal code of morals or ethics? If so, how did that begin? What would it take to compromise it?
His code is 'do the right thing', and that tends to mean protecting people' safety even at the cost of disrespecting rules and traditions. He believes it's possible, and if it's not...he'll do something to himself to make it happen.

4. How does he regard beliefs that differ from his own? Is he tolerant, intolerant, curious, indifferent?
He's initially curious, if a little ignorant of Yevon's teachings, but he tries to respect his friends and their religion up to the point they all learn that it's a lie.

5. What prejudices does he hold? Are they irrational or does he have a good reason for them?
He hates his dad, mostly. Until he doesn't. But he doesn't have Spira's usual prejudices ingrained in him, and that's the key to his ability to bring people together.

- Daily Life -
1. What is the character's financial situation? Is he rich, poor, comfortable, in debt?
Blitz stars make a lot of money. He's probably too comfortable.

2. What is his social status? Has this changed over time, and if so, how has the change affected him?
He was initially a celebrity---going from that to sleeping on dirt and roughing it was pretty tough, but he's confident in himself enough to keep going.

3. Where does he live? House, apartment, trailer? Is his home his castle or just a place to crash? What condition is it in? Does he share it with others?
In Zanarkand, he lived with Auron in the houseboat his parents left behind. It holds a lot of bad memories, so he's not especially fond of the indoors, but he likes to sit outside and watch the ocean.

4. Besides the basic necessities, what does he spend her money on?
Blitzball equipment and good food, for the most part.

5. What does he do for a living? Is he good at it? Does he enjoy it, or would he rather be doing something else?
He's a professional blitzball player, one of the best, and he absolutely loves it.

6. What are his interests or hobbies? How does he spend his free time?
Blitzball, blitzball, and blitzball. (And he might spend some time watching the sunrise too, he can be rather contemplative.)

7. What are his eating habits? Does he skip meals, eat out, drink alcohol, avoid certain foods?
Tidus eats a lot---he's a hungry athlete! He tries to eat healthy to keep his body in shape, will never touch alcohol, but he indulges in barbecue every now and then.

1. Color?

2. Smell?

3. Time of day?

4. Season?

History: Here

Personality:

What happens when a dreamer with his head in the clouds becomes part of a somber and painful reality? The world drags him down, but he also learns to lift the world up. That's Tidus's personal growth in a nutshell: from arrogant blitz king with a hidden sensitive side to a mature and giving person, driven by the hope of improving things in the world.

When Tidus is first introduced, he appears to have the world in the palm of his hand, and the way he carries himself is light and carefree. He has the self-assured attitude befitting his status: a celebrity sports player who's never really struggled in life, as far as the people know. He lives in a fancy houseboat, he's paid very well, and everyone loves him. Who wouldn't be a little cocky under those circumstances?

Overconfidence unfortunately leads to impulsiveness, which can lead him right into the jaws of a fiend or get the group in trouble for breaking a rule. He's never been known for thoughtfulness or patience, but he won't sit idly by while a situation escalates either. He knows to jump into action---when you've got the ball, you've got to score! Or so he says.

Surprisngly, beneath the veneer of confidence, Tidus is quite the sensitive person. It's easy to be brave when things are going well, but they don't always do so. His father Jecht never approved of his son's fretting, whining, and worries, frequently calling him a 'crybaby'. This tendency persists into his teen years, if somewhat reduced. He's tried so hard to get his parents' attention and often failed, and the frustration of losing them, then losing everything he ever knew? It's a bit too much to handle, even though Tidus is embarrassed when his crybaby tendencies are pointed out.

None of this makes Tidus sound like a pleasant person to be around, but a seed of goodness lingers in him from the beginning. As the sensitive worrier, he really doesn't want to be the bad guy that he believes his drunkard bully of a father was. In fact, he often chooses to help people. He leaps to rescue a small girl from crumbling ruins, charges into a temple because he believes the summoner's life is in danger, and pursues a chocobo-eating monster because "it's the right thing to do". He has a strong sense of justice and a will to protect the innocent, born from the desire to be the opposite of what he believes his father was. Even the horrors of the world never entirely bring him down from his belief that the world can be a more just and kind place.

In that, Tidus is almost reflexively optimistic. He believes the long-suffering Aurochs can win a blitzball game against all odds. He believes Yuna is the best summoner ever and never loses faith that she can defeat Sin. He immediately sees the good in his new friend Rikku and fails to understand the widespread prejudice against her people...though he's also fond of her because she was the first person to feed him when he was hungry, to be fair. But as the horrors of Spira's reality set in, and Tidus realizes that the people of Spira have grown up always living in fear of the end, his optimism becomes pure determination to save the world, matching Yuna's.

Tidus's determination is fed by his stubbornness, and by the end it becomes a full-fledged hero complex. Tidus refuses to let his comrades give in to their own despair about the task of defeating Sin without the ritual driving them to keep challenging traditions and thinking about a new way to break the spiral of death. He's tested the most when the true nature of the new plan to defeat Sin is revealed: in order to free Yuna and his friends from the threat of Sin forever, he must sacrifice himself. It hurts, but he accepts it with a somber smile.

That newfound maturity finally allows him to reconcile his rocky past relationship with his father with the better man he's learned Jecht became, and as they both face death, they finally express affection for each other. Tidus passes from Spira, heartbroken that he couldn't stay with Yuna but proud of what they'd accomplished together. But ever-the-optimist, he hangs onto hope that he'll someday see her again.

Tidus has long-since accepted that he can't go home again, especially given what's just happened to him, but he has a natural inclination to make the best of any new situation. After releasing pent-up grief, of course. He might leap into danger before looking, as he tends to do, and boast about his blitzball prowess, but he'd really like to see some more smiles all around and will try to make that happen. It's the best thing he can do with a new lease on life.

Hey...hey, Zunne, it's okay! You can relax. I grew up around machina, it's no big deal. I'm not gonna break it. Now maybe you'd have to worry if you let Wakka anywhere near this thing, but...

[Zunne is still dubious, distinctly not impressed with his charge. There's a muttering of 'kupo' before he floats off-screen.]

What did I say? I'm sorry! The slate is really good---I mean thank you? Oh.

[Only then does Tidus remember he likely has an audience. He shrugs and turns back to the audience.]

Oh, hey guys. I was going to ask if anyone wanted to come to a blitzball practice. We're gonna work on our passes. With a little more work, you can make a team! If I know talent scouts, I know they're looking for new talent who can shake up the game, so it's the perfect time to start!

And also, is anyone else having as much trouble with their moogle as I am? I'm getting the feeling Zunne doesn't like me at all.
